As with many of Depeche Mode's songs, the mythology of what they mean are almost better than knowing. Martin Gore wrote the catchy song and it is theorized that it refers to Martin Gore's lover being a dirty liar. However, he is caught up in it so much that he can't get out. He knows he should but he can't.

A very catchy hook and even dark this is one of those Depeche Mode songs that came about as Martin Gore was starting to really hit his stride as a writer and Dave Gahan is learning how to form a lyric to really bring out some emotion.
