There is a very good chance that the reason box office results have been off for comic movies so much is the fact that there is so much content out there, the average fan feels like they are not caught up enough to go check it out. To get box office results you have to appeal to all fans.
As one who watches everything Marvel has out there if nothing else to see how it all interconnects or turns into the next story, I went to see the latest Marvel movie, the Marvels. Now it is hard to think that Paramount Pictures would ever put out a movie called the Paramounts, but leaving that aside the movie consists of the teaming up of Brie Larson's Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel (which many watched on Disney+), and Monica Rambeau thus known as the Marvels.
It is the first direct sequel for Captain Marvel who has appeared in Avengers movies, but has really been more sidelined waiting for more screen time. This comes back to the plotline which shows up in Marvel comics, movies, and TV shows from time to time, the Kree and their wars on others or wars on themselves. The great thing with most of the Marvel movies, they are meant to be seen as either a series or stand alone. What made so many of these popular is that anybody could watch them, not just the comic savy.
The movie in of itself is not bad but with trying to spend so much time onscreen building chemistry for the ladies, there is very little to buy in on for the bad guy. These movies are carried by how much you love or hate the villain. If you hardly know the villain, you don't buy into the villain or you don't get the villain, it will not resonate with audiences. Marvel and Star Wars both since purchased by Disney are producing content right and left and for those of us who love the content, it is a great thing. For many audiences there is a fatigue, but I think the biggest issue comes with, do you care about the hero and do you care about their adventure they are about to go through. You have to care about the villain. You have to buy into the hero taking the bad guy out.
This is a story with some cool scenes and some cool effects. The leading ladies are fine, but if Marvel wants to keep kicking out stuff and they want Captain Marvel to carry the brand as Tony Stark did, then there needs to be more character development. How many kids want to be Captain Marvel? How many adults repeat lines like they did from Tony Stark. You can't make Captain Marvel Captain America, but you can treat the character as such. Even with Captain America and Iron Man, when the villains were bad, the movies get forgotten. Does the averag fan remember who Guy Pierce played in the third Iron Man movie?
They need to stick more with Shang Chi while they can. There is a push toward the Young Avengers coming out with Ms Marvel, the new Hawkeye, and some of the new heroes. However, I think that a full court press on a new Blade movie, even with Kit Harrington's sword wielding hero as a sidekick as teased in the Eternals may be better at boosting Marvel box office.
